15-05-2008 – OPAL reactor again in operation : The OPAL nuclear research reactor, built by INVAP near Sydney, NSW, Australia, is again in operation.

The OPAL nuclear research reactor, built by INVAP near Sydney, NSW, Australia, is again in operation.

This happens after its owner and operator, ANSTO, recently received the OK from the Australian Nuclear Regulatory Authority, ARPANSA. The new fuel was designed by CNEA, the Argentine Atomic Authority, and built by the French company, CERCA. It includes improvements over that employed initially.

Thus OPAL will soon be in position to regain full power operation and production capacity. As soon as ANSTO´s programme to attain full power is fulfilled, OPAL will fully normalize all production activities, as well as basic and applied research.
